Selvam Karthi, a dynamic hockey player & forward from Ariyalur, Tamil Nadu, has rapidly emerged as one of the most promising talents in Indian men’s hockey. Coming from a humble background—his father a college security guard & his mother a domestic helper—Karthi trained at the Sports Hostel for Excellence in Kovilpatti under the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu. Despite financial hardships during the COVID-19 pandemic, including working part-time at a bakery, he remained committed to his hockey dreams. He broke into the India U‑21 squad in 2018 & made his senior debut at the 2022 Asia Cup, where he scored in a crucial draw against Pakistan. Karthi continued his impressive form in the 2022–23 FIH Pro League, netting five goals in nine matches, including a brace against New Zealand.

Known for his speed, sharp positioning & clinical finishing, Selvam Karthi, a talented hockey player, played a pivotal role in India’s gold-medal win at the 2023 Asian Champions Trophy in Chennai, where he scored twice. He was also honoured as the “Best Young Player” in the match against Malaysia. Karthi is the first player from Tamil Nadu in 13 years to represent the senior national team, earning recognition not only from fans but also from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, who gifted his family a new home in honour of his achievements. With 25 international caps & 10 goals to his name, Selvam Karthi continues to work on his fitness, defensive play & goal-scoring to secure a place in India’s squad for prestigious events such as the Asian Games & the Paris 2024 Olympics.
